How To Read Guitar Tablature

How To read tablature you must know the names of the guitar strings. Each line of the tab represents a string. The top strong is the high E and the bottom line is the low E. All the lines in between are the rest of the strings. The number placed on each line represents the fret you put your finger on. If there is a 0 on the line that means you don't put a finger on the string but just pluck it. To properly tune your guitar you need a guitar tuner, or if you are good enough at tuning by ear you don't need a tuner. A tuning fork can also work if you are good enough. On a electric guitar you need to have a working cable to plug the tuner in. I personally always start with the low E string and work my way down from there, but I have known some people who insist on starting with the A string. It just depends on the person. Slowly twist the tuning heads till you see that the string is in tune.

How to read Tab. Tablature is very easy compared to music notation in the sense that you really don’t have to memorize all that much. The main benefit of Tab is that you can hear a song and be able to play it right away. This is also the downfall you that you must hear a song before you can play it. Tab does not give you the timing of a song just the simple notes that you play in a very simple format. Refer to the example below for a reference of what I will soon be explaining. Tab shows you what string and what fret by using numbers and what string. For example the opened tuned strings on a guitar are E for the top string and then A then D and so forth as the example. To play the note E for the open E string it would zero for plucking the string without fretting anything on the top string and so forth. The three would be the third fret and five would be five easy huh so happy playing.
E|----------------------------------------------------------|
A|-----------------------3---5-----------------------------|
D|----------------------------------------------------------|
G|----------------------------------------------------------|
B|----------------------------------------------------------|
E|-------0-----3----5--------------------------------------|
